A Guide to Horsforthwith Linley & Simpson Estate Agents & Letting Agents Horsforth

Horsforth's position - on the edge of both Leeds and Bradford – makes it one of the most popular commuting suburbs within West Yorkshire.

First appearing in the Domesday Book in 1086, Horsforth's name is derived from Horse and Ford and relates to a river crossing somewhere along the shallow stretches of the River Aire.

Not only did it supply Kirkstall Abbey with building materials and millstones in the medieval period, it provided the stone for Scarborough seafront and sent its prized sandstone from its Golden Bank quarry as far afield as Egypt.

Situated on Horsforth Beck (Oil Mill Beck) were a string of mills serving the textile trade, but a large area of the town still reflects its original function as an agricultural community.

Boasting its own railway station, it is a short ride to Leeds City Station where trains to both London and Edinburgh run every 30 minutes. In fact, Horsforth is practically mid-way between the two capitals.

And for those whose mode of transport includes flying, it is just a short distant to Leeds/Bradford International Airport. Both the M1 and M62 are alsoeasily accessible from the town.

Notable "Horsfordians" include Foreign Secretary David Miliband who, although originally from London, attended Horsforth Newlaithes Junior School in the 1970s when his father Ralph Miliband was a professor at the University of Leeds.

The actor Malcolm McDowell – who starred in A Clockwork Orange - was also born in the town, as was singer Marc Almond and Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom!

Horsforth's town centre can be described as compact, boasting a number of popular pubs and restaurants and good quality family-run stores. For those looking for something a little more cosmopolitan, Leeds and Harrogate are literally on the doorstep. For families, Horsforth has a number of good schools, with three being named top of the class in the environmental stakes, after becoming the first in Yorkshire to earn a top European eco standard.

When it comes to looking for a suitable area to live, you really have to go a very long way to beat Horsforth and all it has to offer.
