A Guide to Wetherbywith Linley & Simpson Estate Agents & Letting Agents Wetherby

Wetherby and its surrounding countryside is well-known as the location of choice for some of Yorkshire's leading sports and TV stars. But its celebrity links – and popularity - stretch back a lot further.

During the war, Hollywood heartthrob Clark Gable was stationed at the airfield at Tockwith, one of the many picturesque villages that sit on the edge of the town itself, which also include the likes of Collingham, Linton and Boston Spa – home to the British Library.

But you do not have to be a star of the silver screen to enjoy the attractions of Wetherby.

For many, it is easy to see the lure of this charming district as a place to call 'home'.

The historic and vibrant market town nestles on the banks of the River Wharfe and is at the heart of the so-called "golden triangle" of Leeds, York and Harrogate.

It provides perfect scenery in an area of great natural beauty with well preserved period architecture, a growing range of places to eat and drink - plus an abundance of boutique shops.

Wetherby is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wedrebi, thought to derive from wether- or ram-farm or else meaning "settlement on the bend of a river". Local folklore has it that when heavy snow storms hit the county, Wetherby does not get as much because the Weather Goes By.

Equidistant 198 miles between London and Edinburgh, the town is just a 20-minute drive from Leeds, York and Harrogate, making it the perfect location for businessmen. And, with great schools on its doorstep and a host of leisure of sporting attractions, it is also ideal for family life.

Sitting alongside the recently upgraded A1, Wetherby provides a gateway to the rest of Yorkshire and beyond. Fun-filled days-out to the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the East Coast are easily arranged from Wetherby.

Sport plays a large part in its life – the Leeds United training ground is based at Thorp Arch, and TV cameras descend on the revamped horse racing course on an ever-increasing basis in the winter so see some of the human and equine stars of the National Hunt season in action.

Wetherby is also regarded as one of the best floral towns in Britain, winning countless awards. Mid June through to late September is when Wetherby's floral extravaganza comes into its own with over 250 hanging baskets and 40-plus feature planters.
