Eco-friendly homes collection in North Yorkshire proves a 'green' success story

ripon development
It's "green for go" for a Yorkshire developer after selling half the new homes it is building as part of an eco-friendly scheme in a village near Ripon.

All the properties at Berkeley DeVeer's flagship £3m site in Melmerby feature air source heat pumps rather than conventional gas or oil.

And, according to the Ripon branch of selling agents, Linley & Simpson, this green dimension has acted as a magnet for the increasing number of homebuyers keen to go back to nature.

Berkeley DeVeer has invested more than £100,000 in bringing this eco-efficiency to Melmerby.

Named Wobeck Meadow to retain the village’s Viking roots, the development features a bespoke collection of 14 homes.

Ranging in price from £240,000 to £475,000, they include six affordable homes to meet the community’s needs, and the first phase is set for completion in the summer.

David Waddington, Head of New Homes at Linley & Simpson, said: "This is a success story that highlights the increasing importance of a property’s green credentials."

"Buyers have been attracted to the significant savings to the running costs that each of these homes will generate. It’s been an important factor in achieving so many sales so quickly after launch.

Opening the door to home ownership, Wobeck Meadow has the added appeal of being available through the Government's Help to Buy scheme to support aspiring buyers.

Mr Waddington added: "This hand-crafted scheme is perfect for those seeking the rare blend of country and town lifestyles. It provides a mix of properties - a choice of three, four and five bedroom detached homes, plus the affordable housing dimension - which is so important to meet the needs of a village such as Melmerby."

"It boasts an idyllic village location yet everywhere is close to hand, from the motorway network to local towns and cities. Nearby Thirsk railway station offers a direct route into Kings Cross and the heart of London.”

"Its location is perfect for families looking to make an area their home, and commuters travelling to and from the well-connected development."

"Opening the door to owning your home, Wobeck Meadow is also available with the Government's Help to Buy scheme to support aspiring homeowners."

This is the latest "home grown" project by Berkeley DeVeer, based at Walton, near Wetherby, who boast 25 years’ expertise in building a diverse range of high-quality homes throughout the UK.

Closer to its Yorkshire roots, its current developments include those in York, Tadcaster, Selby, Northallerton, Holmfirth as well as at Melmerby.

Dan Newett, its Managing Director, said: "We are dedicated to developing the most innovative new homes - and Wobeck Meadows epitomises this approach. Buyers benefit from painstaking craftsmanship, wedded to the latest thinking in eco-efficiency."
