Million pound property sales have nearly tripled over the last five years, says new research...

The number of residential properties selling for £1 million or more in England and Wales has risen from 2,249 in 2002 to 6,170 in 2007.

That's according to the Halifax Million Pound Property Report, which looked at the number of sales in the 12 months to June over the last five years.

Halifax estimates that based on the number of sales in the last year, there are now some 88,000 homes in England and Wales with a value of at least £1 million.
