A historic Yorkshire bed and breakfast – once crowned the best on the planet – is up for sale.

Millgate, in the market town of Masham, near Ripon, can virtually lay claim to being a home in a million … well, at least 869,687!

That's how many hospitality rivals it beat to scoop the coveted title of Best B&B in the World in the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2015/16.

It was up against accommodation with infinity pools, personal butlers and sun-kissed views of the Pacific - but this period property, in a quiet street on the edge of the market square, put them all to sleep by being voted number one. 

Within 24 hours of news breaking about its accolade, its inbox was creaking with almost 1,500 email inquiries from across the world. Within just four days, it had put up its “No Vacancies” sign for the rest of the year. 

The American news channel CNN, with 240 million global viewers, was among the media who called up wanting to make a short film featuring the property and its five-star Yorkshire welcome.

Now this four-bedroom stone property, dating to around 1580, is poised to enter a new chapter in its history after its owners Andrew and Sue Burrell, decided to “call it a night” one final time. 

They have put the property on the market as they prepare to embark on their own new adventure – living in Ireland.

It is being sold as a residential property through the Ripon office of estate agents Linley & Simpson, with an asking price of £449,950.

The bed and breakfast business, such as its website and reservation book, is also available separately should the new owners of Millgate wish to build on its success.

Linley & Simpson area valuation manager, Dave Stokoe, said:

“Millgate consists of three distinct buildings which have been converted into this unique property. 

“The buildings themselves date from the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries and were the former poor house, jail and fire station. 

“Steeped in history, the property retains a lot of the original features, such as the stone open fireplace and exposed beams - a particular favourite of its many American guests.

“A key feature is that it has been tastefully modernised throughout, wedding together a period property with modern day living.”

Briefly, Millgate comprises an entrance hall, sitting room, dining room, shower room, kitchen, bedroom four, dressing room and integral garage to the ground floor. 

To the first floor is bedroom three with en-suite bathroom and separate shower room. 

To the top floor are bedroom two with en-suite bathroom and bedroom three which has a dressing area.

There is a low maintenance rear garden, providing space for outside dining.
