Making Tax Digital for Landlords: Update
You may already be aware that the UK government has introduced a new tax initiative, called Making Tax Digital (MTD).
Landlords enrolled in MTD have to submit tax updates 5 times a year. To help you manage your MTD obligations, we have partnered with the leading landlord accounting software provider Hammock.
We are organising 2 live sessions with the product specialists from Hammock on Monday 12th October at midday and Wednesday 14th October at 4pm.
On the session we will cover:
- The fundamentals of MTD: Who is affected and what are the requirements? (See a quick summary below)
- How Hammock helps manage MTD obligations
- Joint ownership
- How to manage property bookkeeping
- How to submit figures to HMRC
- Q&A

Who will be enrolled?
MTD doesn’t apply to everyone immediately. It’s being introduced in phases based on gross annual income from property and/or self-employment:
● From April 2026: Landlords earning over £50,000
● From April 2027: Landlords earning over £30,000
● From April 2028: Landlords earning over £20,000
What are the requirements?
Under MTD, landlords will need to submit quarterly updates, followed by a final declaration:
● Quarter 1 (6 April – 5 July) → deadline: 7 August
● Quarter 2 (6 July – 5 October) → deadline: 7 November
● Quarter 3 (6 October – 5 January) → deadline: 7 February
● Quarter 4 (6 January – 5 April) → deadline: 7 May
After the fourth quarterly submission, the final step is the Final Declaration, confirming total income, expenses, and tax position for the year (replaces the previous Self Assessment return). The deadline for the Final Declaration is 31st January.
Landlords have to use compatible software to submit their filings. We chose Hammock to support you. Hammock is the first landlord software recognised by HMRC as compatible with MTD.
