CONSTRUCTED using an Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) system, The Sycamores are built to exceed Part L of the The Building Regulations 2010, Conservation of Fuel & Power L1A (2013 edition incorporating 2016 amendments) which outlines requirements for the conservation of fuel and energy in a home.

These systems of construction are energy efficiency, greener and are a more efficient way to create innovative buildings. Their performance criteria are significantly greater than traditional methods of construction with benefits including:

Energy related:

  • High performance U-values (a measure of resistance to heat flow through a given thickness of material) - see table below
  • Lower air infiltration
  • Optimises the benefits of solar gain to reduce the heating costs
  • Smoothes out fluctuations in internal temperature
  • Makes the best use of low temperature heat sources (e.g. air source heat pumps)
  • Lower energy costs - 20-50% energy savings on utility bills
Health related:

  • Reduced air infiltration reduces dust or allergens
  • No cavity walls for mould, mildew, bugs or rodents
  • Non-toxic materials
Structural related:

  • High wind resistant
  • Fire rated assembly
  • Strength is permanent and will not rot or decay
  • Impact resistant and low maintenance requirements
Comfort related:

  • High sound proofing - 3x more sound dampening qualities than traditional build
  • High Thermal Mass Enhances steady temperatures throughout the day and night
  • May attribute to lower insurance costs
The Environment:

  • Reduced energy use cuts CO2 emissions, the main greenhouse gas
  • Help future proof buildings against climate change

ICF blocks are designed to interlock to form an insulated shell. Due to their engineered concrete core they are extremely solid, silent and robust. Their insulated airtight nature delivers year-round warmth and comfort.

The U Values met by The Sycamores ICF system elements are outlined below:

 | Component | Part L Requirement | ICF Building
| Walls | 0.30 W/m2K | 0.18 W/m2K
| Ground Floor | 0.20 W/m2K | 0.12 W/m2K
| Roof | 0.20 W/m2K | 0.15 W/m2K
| Airtightness | <10 m3/hr/m2 | <3 m3/hr/m2
Not only has the ICF method of construction brought you many great energy and environment saving benefits, all new homes at The Sycamores are also using the latest in green home heating technology.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Heating and water is delivered through Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) which absorb heat from the outside air at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water in your home. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would.

The benefits of air source heat pumps are:

  • Lower fuel bills
  • Lower home carbon emissions
  • No fuel deliveries
  • Heat your home as well as your water
  • Minimal maintenance required
Unlike gas and oil boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods.

Potential annual savings of installing a standard air source heat pump in an average sized, four-bedroom detached home:

 | Traditional system | Anticipated Fuel bill saving | Carbon savings
| (per year) | (per year)
| using ASHP |
 | Old (G-rated) gas boiler | £560 to £650 | 4,100 to 4,820 kg
 | New (A-rated) gas boiler | £105 to £110 | 1,980 to 2,320 kg
 | Old electric storage heaters | £1,065 to £1,315 | 4,000 to 5,000 kg
 | New electric storage heaters | £695- £815 | 2,900 to 3,500 kg
 | Old (G-rated) oil boiler | £930 to £1,100 | 6,000 to 7,100 kg
 | New (A-rated) oil boiler | £285 to £330 | 3,100 to 3,600 kg
 | Old (G-rated) LPG boiler | £1,365 to £1,610 | 4,970 to 5,850 kg
 | New (A-rated) LPG boiler | £565 to £660 | 2,500 to 2,930 kg
 | Coal | £540 to £665 | 7,690 to 9,220 kg
