7 December 2015

Record numbers of homebuyers are poised to surf the net on Christmas Day in a bid to unwrap a new home to move into.

December 25 last year saw the number of internet property searches more than double compared to the same day in 2013, breaking

And it is likely to be the same story on Boxing Day as house hunters, armed with their new smartphone or tablet presents, swap cold turkey for hot property in the search for their dream home.

“These statistics banish the myth that it is the New Year when the starting gun is fired in the race for a new home,” said Mark Christopher, Head of Residential Sales across Linley and Simpson’s network of 11 offices across West and North Yorkshire.

“These figures from our partners at RightMove signal a break with tradition - and highlight a growing trend that vendors can use to their advantage.

“Putting a property on the market in mid-December, rather than mid-January, offers them the chance of showcasing it in a shop window that is attracting an online audience at a record rate. Delaying until the new year can be a missed opportunity in terms of reaching out to these ‘Santa surfers’."

“The December upturn is made up of would-be buyers who are first in the queue to buy as soon as 2016 opens for business. And if you aren't on the market then, the chances are you will lose out on the opportunity to feature in their selection list.

Research by Linley & Simpson, which has branches in Leeds city centre, Roundhay, Horsforth, Chapel Allerton, Wetherby, York, Harrogate, Ripon, Saltaire, Ilkley and Wakefield, reveals a range of reasons for the spike in people tuning into RightMove during the festive period.

Many are triggered by the increased popularity of gifting computers, tablets and smartphones at Christmas as well as the season of love and romance sparking the start of new relationships and couples looking to move in together.

For families, it is a period to spend quality time together away from work and the chance to have the uninterrupted space to discuss and plan the future.
