1.  Tracking nutrition!

Get rid of the fad diets and start to eat the right balance for your own requirements. If you want to change your body shape then there is no getting away from the fact that you will need to know what’s going on nutritionally.

The best training in the world will never make up for bad nutrition. Apps like ‘MyFitnessPal’ make it very easy to know what your own unique balance is, whether it’s fat loss or muscle gain you will need to be eating the right balance nutritionally. MyFitnessPal is also a fantastic educational tool to make you aware of the nutritional balance of foods. If you are looking to change shape I would highly recommend starting here first.

2.  Exercise!

The best exercise routine is always going to be the one you can sustain, the one you can do week in week out. We need to get away from overcomplicating everything.

Find an exercise routine that you enjoy and that is sustainable. Too many times we see people starting overcomplicated and ambitious exercise routines in January, only to give up on them after a couple of weeks. I would much rather people find something they enjoy and can do regularly. Yes there are workouts that could be more optimal for your results but for many doing HIIT training whilst performing Olympic weightlifting moves every other day is probably not realistic.

3.  Consistency!

Whatever you choose to do the only way to get results is to keep things consistent.

Generally, people see exercise and nutrition as something difficult and hard to crack. It really shouldn’t be like this. The key to long term results is to learn moderation. You should never have to cut out those nights out or that meal at your favourite restaurant. It’s about learning to have a couple of glasses of wine instead of two bottles or just having a main course rather than plowing through three huge courses. If you know you’ve got a big night then balance your day around it, make sure you do some exercise that day or make sure your lunch isn’t as heavy. It is the simple things that can make a big difference. Whether it’s exercise or nutrition be patient, don’t try and go for anything too extreme. Consistent steady progress week in week out will always get you the best long term results.
