Linley & Simpson, which operates a network of 11 branches across North and West Yorkshire, has further strengthened its presence in York by taking over Coalters.

It will result in Linley & Simpson consolidating its status as York’s largest letting agent, while also elevating its position among the city’s leaders in residential sales.

It will also open up further opportunities for its specialist land and new homes department as developers eye up York in ever-increasing numbers.

Coalters was crowned Best Estate Agent in York 2018 in awards supported by Rightmove, building on the title of Best Single Estate Agency in the UK, presented by the Sunday Times in 2015.

It represents the 31st acquisition – and biggest to date - that Linley & Simpson has completed since it first opened its doors in 1997.

The agency - which has helped an estimated 100,000 people move home since then - is also on the move itself following the latest deal.

It is relocating from its York city centre base in Micklegate to the bigger offices previously occupied by Coalters in nearby Low Ousegate.

Director Will Linley said: “We are delighted to acquire an agency of the size, stature and reputation of Coalters into the Linley & Simpson family.

“This represents a game-changing move for us in our York city centre heartland and propels us, as well as current and future clients, into an exciting new era.”

“Both of us have served the people of York and its wider districts for more than 10 years. And the acquisition of a like-minded agency, offering a real customer-focused experience and with a track record of supporting good causes in the community, is a tailor-made fit for us.”

He added: “We have ambitious plans to develop, improve and innovate our business and, strategically, York is central to this continuing journey of planned growth.

“There are few areas in the UK that command the popularity that York continues to enjoy and we can only see this momentum accelerating to keep pace with demand. This acquisition signals our confidence in York’s future - and investing in it.”

Following the deal and the transfer of Coalters staff, Linley & Simpson now employs more than 180 staff across Yorkshire, and has extended its total lettings portfolio across the county to almost 6,000 homes.

Reuben Barrett, founder and Managing Director of Coalters, said: “We launched the business from my spare bedroom in 2007 and, thanks to our team, I’m proud of how far we have come and what we have achieved.

“We share a lot of synergy with Linley & Simpson – we are both forward-thinking agencies – and the pooling of our combined expertise and insight will create a really strong platform for the future.”

Just two months ago, Linley & Simpson acquired another York agency – Mint Property.

When it launched 21 years ago, it did so with just two offices and a handful of staff.

The company’s network of branches has now grown to include Leeds city centre, Horsforth, Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Harrogate, Ripon, Wetherby, Ilkley, Saltaire and Wakefield as well as York.
