YORKSHIRE, formally known as the County of York, is becoming one of the most important places in the UK, with the likes of Leeds, Hull and Bradford becoming more prominent as centres of finance, culture and more. It's home to the great Yorkshire Dales, invented the Yorkshire pudding and has a breadth of history and culture. There's no wonder that there is a dedicated day to celebrate it!

To celebrate Yorkshire Day, we spoke to some of our branches about the reasons they'd live in Yorkshire and why it makes an appealing place to live.

York

Jack Drewitt, Lettings Consultant of our York branch says, "Yorkshire's heritage and history is great! There are so many treasured places such as York Minster, Whitby Abbey and Castle Howard. Having so many beautiful sites across the county means that there are a never ending list of locations for a day trip. Yorkshire is also the birthplaces of my favourite food on a roast dinner- the Yorkshire pudding, and is home to a chain of restaurants offering an entire roast dinner served in a high Yorkshire pudding wrap, what is not to love about that!

"Having moved to York over a year ago now, I can firmly say that there is a better sense of community here than any other areas I have lived in. People here are open and friendly, and there is always someone around to chat to. The history and aesthetics of York are better than any other city. You can see the influence of other civilisations throughout history in the architecture across the city. The historical buildings and walls in the centre are beautiful, and the city is always busy and lively with people coming from all over the world to learn about our history and see the sights of York."

Ripon

Michelle Denny, Property Consultant of the Ripon branch says, "I fell in love with Yorkshire when I came across the Pennines from Lancashire as a student some 24 years ago. I love everything from the pretty market towns to the vast escapism exploring the wild moorlands and amazing landscapes as well as the friendliness of Yorkshire people. The air is cleaner and the properties are so much prettier. Fields and meadows enclosed by dry-stone walls are a feast for the eyes at any time of year.

"Ripon is a very pretty City (3rd smallest city in the UK) and full of quirk, character and charm. So you have the benefit of the amenities that come with a small city and yet within just a 20-minute drive you can be in the middle of nowhere. The Grammar school is a huge draw for people coming into the area as it is consistently rates as being Outstanding and with easy access for the A1 it is a great place to commute from to the bigger Cities of Leeds, York, Newcastle and you can return to the calmer, slower paced way of life back in Ripon at the end of a busy day."

Wetherby

Emily Wilkinson, Branch Manager of the Wetherby branch says, "I am not originally from Yorkshire but moved here over 20 years ago and fell in love with the county as soon as I arrived. For me, it offers the perfect mix of city and countryside. You can be in a big cosmopolitan city like York and Leeds and yet within an hour's drive you are surrounded by beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. The people here also make the country for me. You are never without a warm welcome or a friendly face wherever you go. I feel proud and lucky to call to call Yorkshire my home.

"Wetherby and the surrounding villages remain ever popular as a place to live and appeal to young professionals, families and those of retirement age alike. The semi-rural location offers a quieter, slower pace of life whilst offering ease of access to all the large facilities in Leeds, Harrogate and York. The proximity of the A1M is also viewed as a real plus for those needing to travel further afield, for business or pleasure. The standard of accommodation is typically high and there is a diverse range available to suit all needs whether that be an apartments with a river view, a terraced or semi-detached house or larger detached home. The area offers excellent local amenities with many independent boutique shops and Boston Spa in particular has a strong café and bar culture with many good eateries. There really is something for everyone. What's not to love about this beautiful market town at the centre of Yorkshire's Golden Triangle?"

Ilkley

A few members of the Ilkley branch rallied together to highlight their favourite things about Yorkshire and Ilkley. The branch said, "The main reasons that we love Yorkshire include the fact that everyone has a friendly nature. You can talk to anybody and whether it's a friend, family, members or stranger you'll always have someone to help you through a tough time and sit down for a pint with. Yorkshire also has everything. From a stunning countryside and coastline to high quality shopping, world class airports and sporting teams and facilities. It also has excellent transport links to London and major cities.

"Where to start with Ilkley. The landscape, rolling hills, the stunning Moors and River Wharfe are all on your doorstep, with great rail links to Leeds and some of the best schools in the country. It's got a few unique shops in the area but the most appealing part of the area is the nature, walks and views. You will also really struggle to find anywhere else quite like Ilkley."

Some of my favourites include York Minster, Whitby Abbey and Castle Howard.

Not to mention the amazing Yorkshire Dales, breath-taking scenery, friendly people and vast amount of pubs!

"Horsforth in particular is one of the most accessible places outside of Leeds city centre, with easy access to motorways and a train station. The suburb is a hot spot for families with its school catchment areas, plenty of spaces for recreation and long list of amenities, including The Brownlee arms pub which celebrates home-grown local sporting talent, The Agora and Miller and Carter Steakhouse."

Saltaire also benefits from being only a short drive from the Yorkshire Dales, with places like Skipton right on your doorstep.

"The immediate location of Bingley is steeped in history, including the 5 rise locks, the Railway children were filmed here and the Worth Valley steam line passes through. Bingley acts as an easy commute for city-working professionals which makes it an ideal place to settle. The town is full of good schools including Bingley Grammar and Beckfoot high school, there are swimming clubs, plenty of sports clubs and canal-side walks to enjoy too."
